Mariachi music is the sound of El Paso, and four Socorro Independent School District mariachi groups recently got the chance to represent the Sun City at the first-ever UIL State Mariachi Festival in San Antonio. The bands from Socorro, El Dorado, Eastlake and Montwood high schools went head-to-head against 54 other Texas schools.

SISD's Director of Fine Arts said “..it shows our district strongly supports mariachi programs.”

The bands were judged on instrumentation, their costumes, and stage presence, with scoring from 1 to 5. All four of the SISD mariachi groups earned a 2 rating.

The Eastlake group was formed just a year ago, and Eastlake student Blanca Alvidrez earned a gold medal for Outstanding Vocalist at State.

Congratulations to all the students who competed!
