VIDEO: Texas High School Band Students Perform At Whataburger
Two Houston-area high school mariachi bands turned a late-night pit stop into an unforgettable performance, and within hours, the moment became a viral sensation.

After earning top honors at a University Interscholastic League (UIL) regional competition, students from Sam Houston High School’s Mariachi Bicentenario and Klein Collins High School’s Mariachi Estrella de Mi Tierra crossed paths at a Whataburger in Refugio. Though they had only stopped for a well-earned meal, they saw an opportunity they couldn’t pass up.
The two groups, both fresh off receiving first-division ratings—the highest possible at UIL music contests—decided to show their appreciation to the restaurant’s staff with a spontaneous serenade. As the sounds of “La Negra” filled the dining room, Whataburger employees and unsuspecting patrons erupted in applause. Some students climbed onto booth chairs, their instruments in hand, while onlookers eagerly captured the moment on their phones.

What started as a small gesture of gratitude quickly spread across social media. Within a week, TikTok clips of the performance had racked up nearly 5 million views. For many, the video stirred deep emotions, with commenters reminiscing about their own connections to mariachi music. One user shared how the song reminded them of their late father, while another, a Haitian-American, recalled growing up with mariachi melodies blasting in the car.
Beyond the viral fame, students say they’re proud to see their culture embraced far and wide. Both mariachi ensembles are now preparing for the UIL state competition in Seguin on Feb. 21, and they’re accepting donations to help cover travel and uniform expenses. Whether or not another Whataburger performance is in the cards, these young musicians have already struck a chord with millions.
