El Paso's Wells Fargo Building Sign Is Up For Auction

For 25 years, the iconic Wells Fargo bank brand stood over the city on what was the tallest building in El Paso before the Weststar Tower was constructed. Now, the name that held the building the longest has finally come down.

The building originally opened in 1971 as The State National Bank Plaza and held strong for over a decade before its first acquisition by MBank in 1984.

MBank would hold the building for less time, being acquired by Norwest Bank in 1995. Norwest would have the shortest time with the building as Wells Fargo would take it over in 2000, just 5 short years later.

Wells Fargo closed last year on January 22nd, 2025 and the buildings signage space went up for auction shortly after.

The price for the space on the building was set at 1.25 million dollars for a 10 year contract. As of now, there hasn't been a public announcement of who the new owner of the space is and what name will replace the Wells Fargo brand El Paso has seen for the last 25 years.

The skyline in El Paso will officially be changing and hopefully whatever name stretches across our sky will have some holding power. Will Wells Fargo hold the record or will some new contender become the name that lights up the night skies for the next few years?
