Rugby is one of those sports that seems intimidating until you try it. Last year, I showed up to Try Rugby Day feeling unsure of what to expect. I wasn’t in peak shape, didn’t know the rules, and had never even touched a rugby ball before. What I found was something I didn’t expect: kindness, encouragement, and community.

And even though I didn’t continue with rugby after that day, the experience was eye-opening and genuinely fun. I left feeling stronger, supported, and proud of myself for just showing up.

This Saturday, June 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Nations Tobin Park, El Paso Rugby is hosting its next Try Rugby Day. It’s completely free and open to everyone, including kids under 18 as long as a parent or guardian signs a permission form. Whether you’re athletic, curious, or just want to shake things up with something physical and social, this is your invitation.

At last year’s Try Rugby Day, I took my time. I wasn’t pushed to perform or judged for not knowing what to do. Instead, I was met with patience and laughter. The coaches walked us through the basics. Other players shared tips. Slowly, I found myself moving, engaging, and smiling through the challenge.

Yes, it was physical. I was sore afterward, but in that good way that reminds you you're alive. Rugby may not have become my sport, but I’m still grateful I tried. That one morning gave me a deeper appreciation for both the game and the people who love it.

Why El Paso Rugby Is More Than Just a Sports Team

Founded by three incredible women in 2021, El Paso Rugby has grown into something truly powerful. The Jackalopes are more than athletes. They are a community of friends, mentors, and teammates who show up for each other on and off the field.

Their mascot, a jackalope, stands for adaptability and strength. Practices are co-ed, giving players across both the men’s and women’s teams a chance to connect and support each other. Whether traveling for tournaments or hosting game-day socials right here in El Paso, the Jackalopes live out the core values of rugby: resilience, respect, and inclusivity.

How to Join El Paso Rugby and Get Involved

You don’t need to know a single rule to show up. No gear, no cleats, no pressure. Just curiosity.

And if you can’t make it to Try Rugby Day this Saturday, no worries. You can attend any practice and jump right in. The team will welcome you all the same.

If you’re looking for a place to move your body, meet new people, and do something totally different, this is your chance. I tried rugby, and even though I didn’t stick with it, it gave me exactly what I needed at the time. Maybe this weekend, it’ll do the same for you.
