Top 5 Words El Pasoans Love to Mispronounce
Show of hands, who has ever been a victim of getting yelled at from a hardcore El Pasoan for adding an “S” to the street name Airway?! Me. I’m raising my hand and I regret nothing!
If you've ever said Airways instead of Airway, don’t worry—you’re not alone and we’re not judging because lets be honest, everyone has been a victim of mispronouncing a word or two in their life!
From street names to restaurant names, I wanted to see what word El Pasoans are guilty of mispronouncing and the results did not disappoint! However, I did feel attacked by most of the responses!
Here's the ultimate list of the top five mispronunciations that made us laugh, cringe, and feel oddly seen:
- “Gualmar” instead of Walmart
It’s the most El Paso thing ever. Your mom didn’t say she was going to Walmart—she said she was going to Gualmar. And she said it with her whole chest. - “Waterburger” instead of Whataburger
We know what you meant... but it still makes Texans cry a little on the inside. What a burger, indeed. - “Supposably” instead of Supposedly
This one had the grammar police SWAT team ready to deploy. It’s supposedly, we promise. - “Pixxa” instead of Pizza
Yup. That gooey slice of deliciousness is pee-tsa, not pixxa or peet-zuh. But hey, if you bring us a slice, we’ll let it slide. - “Airways” instead of “Airway”
I felt personally attacked by this one because this is something I still do... even after being corrected.
