A heartbreaking tragedy has struck two El Paso siblings who were found dead inside an Airbnb in Mexico City.

I first saw this heartbreaking news on FitFam El Paso’s Instagram page which showed an article clip from DailyMail.com.

Although initially referred to as a couple in that article, a GoFundMe page created by their family confirms that Laura Morales and Hugo Iván Morales were brother and sister.

According to media reports, the siblings were staying at a vacation rental in the Cuauhtémoc neighborhood when a maintenance worker arrived to notify them about a water leak repair. After receiving no response, he entered the unit and made the tragic discovery. Authorities believe they had been deceased for at least eight hours before being found.

While the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, preliminary reports suggest carbon monoxide poisoning. According to The Daily Mail, the Mexico City District Attorney's Office is now leading the investigation.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral and burial expenses. The heartfelt message on the page reads,

"My brother and sister were found dead in a México City Airbnb due to carbon monoxide intoxication. We would appreciate any donation you can give. This will be used towards funeral and burial services to alleviate the burden on the family's behalf."

Back home, El Pasoans are mourning their loss, with many taking to FitFam El Paso’s Instagram post to express their condolences and shock, and some even warning travelers to stay vigilant when traveling to Mexico City because this isn’t the first death that has been reported due to Carbon Monoxide:

My little brother, you're one of the most genuine human beings to ever walk this earth.. Grateful and lucky to have had you in my life..”

“If you are traveling to any LATAM country buy a new plug in carbon monoxide detector. Even if you are staying in a hotel. Sadly this is common. They’re available on Amazon for under $30.”

“How sad. I met her at Piedmont Cafe many years ago. I would occasionally run into her around town or when I would go to Piedmont Cafe and she was always so incredibly nice. I hope her family finds peace and justice. “
