Anyone who grew up watching Futurama is aware of the iconic characters from the show; Fry, Leela, Bender, Dr Zoidberg, Professor Farnsworth & so on. But one character has had a power of the fan base. A, shall we say, mesmerizing power, over fans of the show. Of course we're talking about the hypnotizing amphibian known as...the Hypnotoad; a character first introduced in 2001. And one Texas college in Fort Worth, Texas has embraced the Hypnotoad as their school mascot.

If you don't know Hypnotoad, here he is being introduced in Season 3.

Be warned though... once you look deep into its eyes... you can't look away.

Which Texas college has made Hynotoad their mascot?

The character had gardened so much love, that the Texas Christian University, TCU in Fort Worth, decided to have fun with this character. Their official team & mascot is SuperFrog of the TCU Horned Frogs.

But they decided to make the Futurama character their "unofficial" mascot.

In December of 2022, against Texas Tech, on top of the giant screen in the stadium, they unveiled the "new" mascot in a Willy Wonka styled unveiling video. Now my words can't describe the video accurately. Watch the video for yourself.

Even if you're not a fan of TCU, that's just brilliant. You can tell they had some fun with this character; painting Hypnotoad in the school colors, sporting a giant TCU in the middle.

If you're wondering what the creator of Hypnotoad, Eric Kaplan, had to say about it. Well... he loved it & has no problem with the school using Hypnotoad.

I'd love to see the UTEP Miners do this with a Futurama character; my choices would be either Nibbler or Bender Rodriguez. Nibbler because he's cute but also ferocious (just like the El Paso Chihuahuas) & Bender because who wouldn't love him say "bite my shiny metal a-" right when the UTEP Fight Songs hits.
