Daylight Saving Time (DST) is coming up, and once again, Texans are preparing to lose or gain an hour that none of us asked for. UtilitiesNow.com surveyed 1,000 Texans about this biannual ritual, and, spoiler alert: half of us can’t stand it. Between the sleep disruptions, questionable energy "savings," and the fact that we’re all forced to play clock roulette, it’s no wonder people want it gone.

Let’s break down some key findings that prove Texans are as over DST as I am – and maybe, just maybe, it’s time to abolish this nonsense.

Half of Texans Don’t Like Daylight Saving Time – Are We Surprised?

According to the survey, 1 in 2 Texans dislike DST. And really, can you blame them? Almost 20% even believe that this time switch increases their electricity bill by about 2% because the early darkness forces lights on sooner. So, if you thought DST was helping you save money on your electric bill, you might be paying more for the “luxury” of that “extra” hour of sunlight that none of us asked for.

The Generational Divide – Gen Z Is Still Optimistic, Bless Their Hearts

While most of us (understandably) want DST gone, Gen Z seems oddly okay with it, with a whopping 54% supporting DST. Perhaps they’re still young enough to think an hour of lost sleep is worth the excitement of “springing forward.” Millennials, though? They’re over it. A full 51% of millennials dislike DST and have clearly had enough of the twice-a-year time jump. Meanwhile, Gen X and Baby Boomers are so over it they’re practically leading the charge to ditch DST forever, with 72% and 69%, respectively, in favor of abolition.

DST Ruins Our Mood, Sleep, and Productivity – The Holy Trinity of "I’m Done"

Let’s talk about how DST messes with Texans’ lives on a deeper level. When asked how DST impacts them:

  • Mood: Nearly half (46%) say it worsens their mood. The other half must be too exhausted to care.
  • Sleep Quality: A whopping 53% report worse sleep. Because, you know, who doesn’t love tossing and turning over whether it’s 2 a.m. or 3 a.m.?
  • Productivity: DST drags down productivity for 47% of Texans. Forget that “extra hour of daylight” pitch – it’s hard to be productive when you’re sleep-deprived and cranky.

Of course, there’s a brave 13% who claim DST actually improves their productivity. To these overachievers, I say: teach us your ways.

Texans Are Ready for Action – Government, Take Note

If DST was put to a vote today, 3 in 5 Texans would scrap it. And a massive 70% would support local government efforts to abolish DST altogether. It’s almost as if Texans are practically begging for a government intervention here – a rare unifying cause that brings together Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and even some Gen Zers who are too sleepy to fight it.

Texans are tired – literally and figuratively – of the time change madness. Daylight Saving Time, it’s been real (unfortunately), but the clock has run out on you. Let’s take a cue from our neighbors in Arizona and Hawaii who live blissfully without it and let this time-shifting circus finally end.
