Under state law, municipalities and local governments get to set certain rules about how cannabis products are sold. No city or town, though,  is allowed to ban the sale of cannabis outright.

One of the proposals that were voted DOWN was a provision to allow dispensaries to remain open 24 hours a day.  Members of the community, a police officer, and even a dispensary owner argued against the 24-hour-a-day measure.

Current hours of 7 am to midnight Monday through Saturday and 8 am to midnight on Sunday will remain in place.

Here are some of the provisions and measures that were APPROVED by the council and city manager:

-The minimum distance between a dispensary and a school or daycare will be shortened from 300 feet to 200 feet.

- Licensed retailers will be able to operate out of a modular or pre-fab building while waiting for a permanent structure to be built.

This next one will matter more to customers…

- It looks like licensed dispensaries will be allowed to operate drive-thru windows going forward.

Cannabis sales in the month of May for Sunland Park came in at nearly 1.5 million dollars. That’s a slight increase from gross receipts of 1.4 million dollars.

As a friendly heads-up, some of the dispensaries in Anthony are RIGHT NEXT to the Texas state line. I’ve noticed police presence on the TEXAS side seems…enhanced.

What I’m saying is, if you’re going to drive to one of these spots and purchase cannabis DON’T just turn around and go the way you came. It seems likely to me that Texas officers are noting cars and license plates that go into New Mexico and then return 10 minutes later. One dispensary employee has even intimated as much to this reporter.
