Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino will finally be allowed to reopen on March 5 which is just shy of a year to the day after having to temporarily close.  The State of New Mexico initially required the racetrack stop operating on March 15, 2020.

This is great news for people who are just beginning to head out again after almost a year of restrictions caused by the global coronavirus pandemic.  It’s also a sign that things are slowly continuing to improve.

While the horse racing season at Sunland Park typically runs from December through April of each year, the casino slot machines and events like mariachi nights typically ensures that the racetrack remains a popular destination for a nice night out anytime of the year.

For those wondering if this means that their signature race, the Sunland Derby will be held this year, Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino unfortunately still had to cancel this year’s event altogether making it two years in a row that the Sunland Derby will not happen.

Like most places that have opened again, the racetrack will be operating at a capacity limit, in their case 25 percent.  The slot machines will be open and the allure of those flashing lights and beeps and boops will no doubt call their former patrons back but those wanting to stop by Sunland Park to grab a bite to eat will still need to make plans to do so elsewhere as indoor dining will not be allowed.

Anybody interested in betting on the ponies can do so via simulcast.  It’s not entirely clear at the moment if actual, live horse racing will be happening in any capacity at Sunland Park.

Additionally, the racetrack is currently hiring and those interested can call575-874-5200 for information.
