Texas Restaurant In Major Trouble for Freezer Filled with Shark Fins

Every year, usually during "Shark Week", we find out about how important sharks are to the ocean's ecosystem. We also find out every year that sharks are decreasing in numbers due to them being hunted for their teeth and fins.

Well, now a Texas restaurant is adding to the problem of shark hunting! According to Texas Game Wardens, a San Antonio seafood restaurant is now under investigation after an inspection found 381 whole shark fins and an additional 29.2 pounds of frozen shark fins inside the restaurant's commercial freezer!

No further information was given about the fishy discovery but just look at all those shark fins!

It makes me wonder what kind of sharks they were. I don't claim to be a shark expert, but I totally watch Shark Week every year and I definitely know that in the Lone Star state there is a ban on the sale and possession of shark fins.

Texas isn't the only one, though. There are 13 states and three US territories that also ban the sale and possession of shark fins. It sound insane that there are only 13 states that ban finning, as it is known.

According to this map from the Animal Welfare Institute, in states like Arizona, Utah and Colorado- finning is not illegal and shark fin soup is being served in restaurants. Shark fin soup is considered a delicacy in East Asian societies, and the demand for shark fin soup and other shark dishes cause an estimated 73 million sharks being killed each year for their fins alone!

“Because a business is involved, we have to gather all the facts and see who is actually involved,” Texas Game Warden Kevin Winters told KENS-TV. The name of the restaurant was not disclosed.
