The Spirit of Rugby: El Paso’s Jackalopes
Rugby, a game born of defiance and determination, has captured hearts across the globe. Here in El Paso, it’s alive and thriving through the Jackalopes. This team isn't just a collection of players; it’s a vibrant community rooted in resilience, unity, and passion—a perfect match for the rugged spirit of the Southwest.
Rugby: More Than Just a Sport
Rugby’s story began with a bold move—one player breaking the rules to redefine the game. That same spirit fuels the Jackalopes, who embody the values of inclusivity, teamwork, and adaptability. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a total newcomer, rugby has a place for everyone. With formats like 15s, 7s, and 10s, there’s a role to suit every player, from powerhouse forwards to fleet-footed backs. These are all terms you'll learn once you dive in!
But rugby isn’t just about the game; it’s about building a community. In El Paso, players, fans, and even local businesses come together, turning matches into events and post-game socials into celebrations. The Jackalopes foster a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the field.
El Paso’s Unique Rugby Legacy
Founded by three visionary women in 2021, El Paso Rugby has grown into a cornerstone of the local sports scene. The Jackalope mascot symbolizes agility, strength, and camaraderie, perfectly capturing the team’s ethos. Competing in tournaments across the Southwest, the women’s team showcases skill and spirit, while the men’s squad prepares for a groundbreaking season with games spanning Texas, New Mexico, and beyond. Though the Jackalopes Mens and Womens teams play separately, practice is co-ed which gives the team a chance to build more connection and support each other even though they don't play on the same fields. With each match, the Jackalopes not only represent El Paso with pride but also cultivate a culture of mutual respect and friendship, hallmarks of rugby’s global tradition.
