A skate plaza, soccer fields and an RV camp site are among the upgrades to Ascarate Park the County Public Works Department has proposed to Commissioners Court.

According to the El Paso Times, the preliminary plan is to rehab the park in phases beginning with a general sprucing up of the place, and adding things like a dog park, and a walking garden.

Bigger, more expensive projects would follow. Per the article, phases 2 and 3 would include:

"Softball fields with lights and concessions areas, a cleanup of the area where Western Playland used to be, the construction of nine synthetic soccer fields with lights, an aquatics center splash park, a plaza-style skate park, an RV campsite, a scenic view event space and a soccer complex."

The price-tag to make all that a reality is an estimated $47 million.

It's important to note that as of now, all the proposed ideas are just that. Nothing is set in stone. The Public Works Department will first take input from the community and then go back to Commissioners Court in a couple of months with a more concrete plan.

If they're looking for feedback, might I suggest a rock stage by the lake with a nice, big grass lawn for outdoor concerts and plays, kind of like what the Chamizal has. I remember Western Playland used to have a stage out past all the kid's rides when it called Ascarate home and they used to get pretty good crowds when they'd have outdoor shows.

How about you, what kind of improvements and additions would you like to see happen at Ascarate Park?
