Fact: KVIA reporter and anchor Kate Bieri really is as sweet as she comes off on-air!

Another Fact: New Mexico reporting just won’t be the same without the passionate reporting from Kate Bieri, but I’m excited to see this small town girl make the move to Memphis, Tennessee!

Kate, or as I like to call her “KB” was born in Albuquerque, NM and grew up in Las Cruces so the stories she reported on from her hometown always came from the heart.

She was always eager and excited to tell the stories of New Mexico and you could see that passion and dedication in all of her reporting.

KVIA was Kate’s first reporting gig right out of college. She spent the past five years as KVIA’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom reporter and then made the move to weekend evening news anchor and producer where I would spend most of my time with her talking about life and dating apps. Yes, dating apps. Kate HATED that I would never swipe left on any potential match, but she still had hope for me!

Anyways, Kate recently announced that she would be leaving her hometown to take a job in Memphis, Tennessee and honestly….. She’s the only ten I see around here! (I had to!)

Kate will be joining FOX 13 Memphis as a consumer reporter. This will be the first position of its kind at FOX 13 Memphis and Kate is excited to be able to take on a new role that will take her out of her comfort zone and teach her so much!

I’m so excited to join the incredible team at @FOX13Memphis in just a couple weeks We will launch a new consumer reporting role at the station! Thank you to El Paso, Las Cruces and the Borderland,” wrote Kate.

Kate is one of the most hard working and compassionate journalists I have had the honor of working with. There would be days when I would walk into work in such a bad mood and Kate would greet me with a simple compliment and my bad day quickly turned into a good one all thanks to KB’s contagious positive mood!

On a personal level, Kate was always my biggest cheerleader and she was always a champion for all of her fellow colleagues because in her world, if one of us succeeds in life, we all succeed!

My favorite memory of working with Kate was when I posted about my nails being such a mess and me not having the time or energy go get them done.

KB text me and told me she wanted to treat me to a day at the salon.... the salon being the KVIA conference room and Kate being the nail artist!

Another Fun Fact: It was KB who sent me a meme one day that had my favorite phrase on it. “Mija, Yes you can.” I saved that image because it meant so much to me that she remembered me when she saw it on her news feed.

Fast forward a year later and I would use that image to create my non-profit organization, “Mija, Yes you can.” Imagine if KB would have never sent that image to me?! She’s the real MVP!

I asked KB what she will miss the most about El Paso and Las Cruces:

“Las Cruces, El Paso and the Borderland will always be home! I’ll definitely be back soon to visit family and friends. I am endlessly grateful for the community’s love, support and generosity! Thank you to Kevin Lovell, Brenda De Anda-Swann and Tom Scott for pushing me, guiding me and helping me grow into the journalist I am today.”

In this business, journalists come and go but there are very few that are able to leave their mark in the community they report for and KB is that very few.

The borderland is losing another great journalist but it’s a beautiful feeling knowing that the borderland is home to such talented journalists that will take a little piece of the borderland with them wherever they shine!

Good luck, Mijitz. And remember, whenever someone tells you that you can’t do something you proudly respond, Yes I Can! Because, Mija, yes you can and yes you did! I'm proud of you.
