Following her split from Russell Brand, Katy Perry has been lying low. Friends reported that she was using her downtime to write new songs for her followup to her massively successful ‘Teenage Dream.’ While we haven’t heard any just yet, Perry did release a new acoustic version of her current hit, ‘The One That Got Away.’

While the original had sad lyrics camouflaged by a catchy hook and danceable beat, Perry’s acoustic rendition of ‘The One That Got Away’ sounds more emotionally honest and much closer to her Christian coffeehouse roots than any of her more recent work. You can hear the pain in Perry’s voice in this collaboration with Jon Brion. Her vocals are clipped, and towards the end of the song you can almost hear her voice breaking. She sounds like she means it. Whether intentional or not, the track is both conveniently timed and cathartic for Perry.

Perry announced the single release via Twitter, where she’s been more active recently than she was immediately following Russell Brand’s divorce announcement. The Katy Cats proud leader posted, “Special surprise 4U on iTunes! The amazing Jon Brion & I put a little ACOUSTIC spin on #the1thatgotaway. Hope you like!”

Perry and Brand were rumored to be meeting in Los Angeles this week, in which Perry wanted to give things another go and Brand wanted to hash out divorce details. Maybe if she plays this for him (and if he sees her with her cute new blue hair) he’ll change his mind.
