Football Friday Night wrapped up another week of high school football in El Paso with week three action! Check out recaps below from last week's games.

Franklin outlasts Coronado, 14-13

In an ugly edition of the West Side Bowl, Franklin eked out a slight 14-13 win over Coronado for their sixth straight victory in the rivalry series at the Sun Bowl.

The Cougars were playing without wide receiver Patrick Powers, running back/linebacker Jordan Morales and backup tailback Ernie Powers. Meanwhile, the Thunderbirds' quarterback Owen Levesque was out with a leg injury.

Coronado backup quarterback Ben Wilson played well in the game, as he scored a rushing touchdown in the first half. The Thunderbirds led at the half thanks to a Blake Randag kickoff return for a touchdown, 13-7.

In the third quarter, Franklin capitalized off Coronado penalties and punched in the go-ahead touchdown with their third-string running back Jason Villagrana from 4-yards out. The Thunderbirds had several chances down the stretch, but weren't able to score in the second half, ultimately falling 14-13.

Eastwood outlasts Pebble Hills 49-42 in 1-6A opener

By Steve Escajeda

In a football game that resembled more a track meet, the Eastwood Troopers and Pebble Hills Spartans put on an offensive display that resulted in a combined 91 points scored, 901 total yards and 13 touchdowns.

In fact, at one point midway through the third quarter, both teams combined for three touchdowns in a 31-second span.

In the end, it was the play of senior quarterback Evan Minjarez who was the difference in Eastwood’s 49-42 win. Minjarez passed for 197 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 150 yards and another score.

Also coming up big for the Troopers was running back Max Mancilla, who rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

Minjarez’s favorite target was Rudy Garcia, who caught four passes for 101 yards and a score.

The victory raised Eastwood’s overall record to 2-1, and 1-0 is District 1-6A action.

Pebble Hills, who fell to 2-1 and 0-1 in league play, was led by their quarterback Gael Ochoa, who completed 18 of his 24 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns. Ochoa also rushed for 76 yards and two more scores. The 76 yards pushed the senior over the 2,000-career rushing yards mark.

Marcus Torres caught nine passes for 132 yards and a touchdowns to lead the Spartans.

Pebble Hills will try to regroup next Friday against the El Dorado Aztecs (0-3, 0-1) while the Troopers will get a much-deserved bye.

Parkland dominates Burges on homecoming, 35-7

By Dave Gest

The Parkland Matadors defeated the Burges Mustangs 35-7 on homecoming night at Matador Stadium. Parkland senior running back Anthony Carrillo starred with over 230 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Matadors quarterback Erik Ortiz threw for 132 yards and ran for another 46.

The Parkland defense held Burges to just 150 total offensive yards that came mostly from two big plays, a 60-yard pass from quarterback Alex Rios to CB/WR Raniyen Orr and a 41-yard pass from Rios to tight end Devin Mata.

Parkland improved to 3-0 and will face Chapin (1-1) next week. Burges falls to 0-3 and will travel to Ysleta (1-2).

Canutillo rips Austin 35-7

by Brandon Cohn

The Canutillo Eagles are known for their ferocious defense each and every year, and this season is no different thus far as they destroyed Austin on Homecoming at Lowenberg Stadium on Friday evening.

Austin blinked and was down 21-0 in the second quarter thanks to 3 Panther turnovers in the frame, including two Pick-6 by QB Anakin “Skywalker” Torres. Canutillo would score another defensive touchdown in the second quarter when DB Nathan Orduno blocked a punt attempt and scored.

The Eagles took a commanding 28-0 lead into the half thanks in part to their backup QB Matthew Gasca who found WR Pablo Peregrino late in the first half for a 12-Yard score.

The Panthers narrowly avoided the shutout as QB Torres would score their lone points of the contest with seconds left in the game. Canutillo’s stifling defense caused four Austin turnovers throughout the game and blocked a punt too.

Canutillo (2-1) will host Del Valle next Friday evening in what should be quite an entertaining contest to say the least, while Austin (0-3) will host Hanks on September 15 on their Homecoming.
