Pebble Hills routs Coronado, 38-25
By Adrian Broaddus
After losing an emotional 6A matchup to Eastwood a few weeks ago, Pebble Hills bounced back with a resounding 38-25 road win at Coronado.
The Spartans took a 28-3 lead to the half, featuring two first half rushing touchdowns by quarterback Gael Ochoa and a 29-yard rushing touchdown by running back Zerian Quarles.
Coronado rallied in the second half after scoring the first two touchdowns in the third quarter and forcing a turnover on defense. Quarterback Owen Levesque, who missed the last two games with an injury, led the comeback efforts for the Thunderbirds by tossing three passing touchdowns in the second half.
However, Pebble Hills overpowered Coronado in the fourth quarter. When Coronado cut the lead to three points (28-25) early in the fourth quarter, Ochoa broke away for a 60-yard rushing touchdown on the next possession for the Spartans. Pebble Hills never looked back and won, 38-25.
Del Valle rides Fuller to a 56-49 win
By Steve Escajeda
Shelton Fuller rushed for 314 yards and scored five touchdowns to help lead the Del Valle Conquistadores to a wild 56-49 victory over the Chapin Huskies Friday night at Conquest Stadium.
Del Valle (4-1) put up a whopping 589 total yards (449 of it on the ground) on the usually stingy Chapin (2-2) defense.
Fuller, a junior, who only carried the ball 11 times, scored on runs of 93, 71, 58, 50 and 14 yards.
The Huskies actually took a 21-14 lead late in the second quarter, but Del Valle answered with three touchdowns in the final 2:28 of the half and never trailed after that.
Juan Archuleta also helped Del Valle’s running game by chipping in 97 yards on 13 carries.
After misconnecting on his first five passes, quarterback Jake Fette rebounded to finish 5-of-11 for 140 yards and a touchdown. He also scored on a rushing touchdown that gave Del Valle a two-touchdown lead with 4:05 remaining, sealing the win.
Coming up big for Chapin was Carey Wade, who rushed for 196 yards and three touchdowns. Deveon Singleton added 70 yards on the ground and two scores.
Next Friday, Del Valle will open District 1-5A (div. 1) action at Horizon (1-4) while Chapin will try to regroup when it travels to Irvin (1-4).
The Canutillo Eagles and longtime head coach Scott Brooks overcame the Parkland Matadors and second-year head coach Leigh McWhorter with a swift 37-7 win.
