There used to be way more in Texas; we used to have at literally HUNDREDS of theaters since the 1950s. Sadly that is no longer the case as we've seen some many popular places close down. Some are unfortunate to close down after multiple re-openings

  • The Tower Drive-In in Rule, TX opened in 1955 and closed in 2001. It reopened in 2004 but closed again in 2012.
  • The Sky Vue Drive-In in Lamesa, TX was closed in 2015 after a fire destroyed the giant movie screen.
  • The Midway Drive-In in Turkey, TX opened in 1955 and closed in 1987. It reopened in 2000 and lasted another 5 years. It reopened AGAIN in 2006 and closed one more time in 2014.
  • Alice's Buckhorn Drive-In off of Route 44 was opened in 1948 and closed in 1986. These places are just some that are no longer around.

And we haven't even talked about the ones that were in El Paso, Texas either.

But like we mentioned before, there's still some to enjoy in Texas. so if you want to relive the sense of going to the drive-in, you can!
