These Texas Artists Have Given Some Amazing Christmas Classics
We know Texas loves Christmas songs; you can find out what is the state's favorite Christmas tune here. But we've seen some amazing Christmas songs done by our very own Texas artists too; Billy Gibbons, Koe Wetzel, even Hellyeah have done their own renditions of songs to blast out during the holidays.
Billy Gibbons
Yes the legendary guitarist & singer from ZZ Top has given us a few Christmas classics over the years including a rendition of "Run Run Rudolph" with Dave Grohl & the legendary Lemmy. He's also done his own version of Jingle Bells called "Jingle Bell Blues" in 2021.
Koe Wetzel
The country rock artist from Pittsburgh, Texas recently put out a Christmas album called "Wetzel's Wonderland" & on it are 3 Christmas classics:
- "I'll Be Home for Christmas",
- "Blue Christmas",
- & "Please Come Home For Christmas"
Clearly this man loves Christmas, he's even having drinks with Ol' Saint Nick!
The Fabulous Thunderbirds
The blues rock group have been a staple of the Austin scene since 1974 so it's no surprise they would give us a Christmas song. The Fabulous Thunderbirds have actually given us two; "Merry Christmas Darling" that was featured on the compilation album, An Austin Rhythm & Blues Christmas & "Winter Wonderland".
Old 97s
The Americana rock band from Dallas not only gave us original Christmas songs on the Guardians of the Galaxy in 2022, The Old 97s actually gave us an entire Christmas album called "Love the Holidays".
George Strait
You can't talk about Texas music WITHOUT mentioning "The King of Country", George Strait from Poteet, Texas gave us some Christmas albums during his career; the first being "Merry Christmas Strait to You!" in 1986. Since then, George has put out 6 more Christmas albums until 2016.
Willie Nelson
Nothing says Christmas in Texas without some Willie Nelson. Willie's first Christmas album, "Pretty Paper" was released in 1979. Since then he has at least 5 Christmas albums in total.
Johnny & Edgar Winter
The brothers from Beaumont, Texas have had amazing careers on their own & together too. Back in 1969 they did a version of "Please Come Home For Christmas" together. They truly do work well together don't they?
Eric Johnson
I bet you never knew the guitar virtuoso from Austin did a Christmas song did you? It's true. Eric Johnson recorded an instrumental version of "The First Noel" called "The First Nowell" on the 1997 album, "Merry Axemas: A Guitar Christmas". Sometimes you need to let the guitar do the singing for you...
Hellyeah
Not every song about December or Christmas is a jolly one; take "Black December" by Hellyeah from their 2014 album "Blood For Blood". Speaking from the perspective of Vinnie Paul, you can completely understand why December wasn't the best month for him (John Lennon & Dimebag Darrell... enough said).
Still, I included it here just in case you need a heavy metal song to blast out for Christmas, & one to blast out to pour one out for John, Dimebag, or anyone you may have lost around this time...
Before we close our list, there is ONE more to mention. While it's not a song, it's too good to leave off. We have to mention Stevie Ray Vaughan's holiday message that he gave the world before his passing.
We hope that the holidays will joyous ones for you, your friends & your family. Happy Holidays.
