Texas’ Triumphs in the Indy 500 Throughout History
When you think of the most iconic races of all time; The 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Daytona 500 & the Indianapolis 500 rank as some of the most important races for any driver. We've see Texas win the Daytona 500, but now it's time to look at the Indy 500. Who's won the Indy 500 from the state of Texas?
A.J. Foyt (4 times)
The first Texas driver to ever win the Indianapolis 500 is one of the biggest names in racing: Houston's A.J. Foyt. His first win would come in 1961,
1964,
1967
& his final win would come in 1977. In total A.J. would win a total of 4 times; the most of any driver from Texas.
Johnny Rutherford (3 times)
Another Texas legend is Johnny Rutherford aka, Lone Star JR. Despite being born in Coffeyville, Kansas, he would represent Texas for most of his racing career. He would win the Indy 500 3 times: in 1974,
in 1976,
and finally in 1980
Ryan Hunter Reay (2014)
The Dallas native is the latest Indy 500 winner; winning in 2014. His sole win would later become of the greatest finishes in Indy 500 history; Ryan would edge out Helio Castroneves by just 0.0600 seconds.
A honorable mention to Rufus "Parnelli" Jones
The winner of the 1963 Indianapolis 500, Rufus "Parnelli" Jones was born in Texarkana, Arkansas. The reason why he's mentioned is because even Texarkana is in Arkansas, it shares a border with Texas. So he was worth mentioning here.
