Texas Inches Closer to Allowing Vodka-Based Canned Cocktails

Midland, Texas --  If you have ever been roaming the grocery store and noticed that there aren't ready-to-drink cocktails in the alcohol section, that is because it isn't legal for stores to sell them in Texas.  Currently, it is illegal for the sale of ready-to-drink (RTD) spirit-based cocktails to be sold in convenience and grocery stores.  However, a new proposed Senate Bill could change all that.

In the past few weeks, Senate Bill 2225 and House Bill 4077 were introduced into legislation.  On April 17th, Senate Bill 2225 passed a committee vote and is now on track to be proposed to the Senate for consideration.  If the bill passes, it will be brought before the House of Representatives.  If passed by the House, the bill becomes a law.

For several years, liquor sales at groceries and convenience stores have been prohibited.  If passed, this means brands such as certain Buzzballs, White Claws infused with Vodka, and other popular frozen RTD cocktail mixes could find themselves in grocery and convenience stores throughout Texas.

According to KHOU-TV, this could rake in millions of dollars in revenue from state taxes in the coming three to five years.  More to come on this situation as it develops.
