There is an old wives' tale in Midland-Odessa and most places in the South that claims if you are feeling under the weather, drinking a 7-Up, Sprite, or a Ginger Ale will help make you feel better.  This is predominantly in Mexican-American households, and people tend to genuinely believe this to be true.  SPOILER:  It isn't.

Soda Will Make You Feel Better

How many times have you heard if you drink a 7UP, Sprite, or a Ginger Ale that you will feel better?  Flat out, this is an old wives' tale and not sound medical advice.  In fact, there is no proof of this being true on any level.  While the carbination may make you experience temporary relief if you have an upset stomach, it is not treating any illness you may be going through.

Breaking Down the Science

  • Sugar, Sugar, Sugar- Soda is filled with an enormous amount of sugar.  This can dehydrate you, which is not good, especially if you are vomiting or have diarrhea.
  • No Real Ginger Here- Ginger Ale does not include real Ginger.  If it does, it is a small amount that won't do anything for your stomach.
  • Lack of Nutrients-  Soda has zero nutritional value.  The body needs hydration, something that a sugary drink does not provide.

What To Do If You're Feeling Sick

Doctors recommend clear liquids such as water or perhaps an electrolyte drink like Gatorade or Pedialyte.  Getting non-sugary fluids in your system will work much more efficiently than a carbonated drink.  Granted, symptoms may vary depending on what is wrong; however, it is still better than drinking a soda.
