Yes, it seems the roads in Amarillo are always under construction. From local city projects to ones that span different cities (see I-27), there are cones and slower speed limits everywhere we turn...literally.

There's one project, however, that has been announced, and it's an expansive one to say the least. This isn't something that is going to cover just a few miles of road; this is going to connect cities in a different way.

$47 Million Project For Amarillo To Laredo

Back on April 6, TxDOT submitted plans to the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation for a $47 million project that will connect Amarillo to Laredo in a whole new way. A big part of it is upgrading the roadway along the corridor of I-27.

The upgrades will run from north of FM 2186 to north of Arden Rd., and the intention is to connect the two cities for an easier, quicker drive.

What Does This Mean For Amarillo

It means several things, honestly. The plans will cover over 168,000 square feet, and they will bring a whole host of upgrades to the area. According to the plans, they are looking at adding four new main lanes, traffic signals, bridges, and ramps.

The other thing it's going to bring is the Arden Rd. grade separation. This project will allow Arden Rd. to go all the way through as opposed to having the split it currently has. This is something that has been needed for a while.

This project is slated to begin on November 30th and will take a while to complete. They anticipate it to be done by November 2029, so several years of construction are in our future.
