Amazon Picks This Texas City To Test Drone Delivery of Prescriptions

Soon, residents in one Texas town will be looking to the sky and seeing Amazon drones buzzing above.

Amazon will soon be launching drones in order to test out delivery of prescription medication. The company announced on Wednesday that College Station will be the test site for drone delivery. According to the Dallas Morning News, prescriptions will be delivered within an hour of the order being placed.

The drone will be programmed to fly from a delivery center to the home address. According to Amazon the drone will then descend to about 13 feet and drop a padded package to the ground.

Amazon says customers will be able to choose from more than 500 medications, a list that includes common treatments for conditions like the flu or pneumonia, but not controlled substances.

The company’s Prime Air division began testing drone deliveries of common household items last December in College Station and Lockeford, Calif. Amazon spokesperson Jessica Bardoulas said the company has made thousands of deliveries since launching the service, and is expanding it to include prescriptions based in part on customer requests.

Amazon says they are working to get drone delivery of medications out as quickly as possible to help with health.
While this drone delivery for College Station is new, drone delivery of medication is not new. Back in 2019, CVS and UPS teamed up to test out drone delivery. That program has since ended. The Dallas Morning News also reported that in Salt Lake City, Intermountain Health began drone deliveries in 2021 and has been expanding the program. They have teamed up with a company called Zipline that uses drone to drop packages using parachutes.
It appears as though drone delivery is here and will probably be expanding across Texas soon.
