East Texas Residents Share the Best Walking and Hiking Spots
(Mix 93-1) Now that fall is officially here and the first cold front of the season has arrived, many East Texans are thinking about finally getting out of the house and enjoying the outdoors. With the heat and humidity taking a back seat for a while, we're going to enjoy going outside without having to grab a towel to wipe the sweat off of us after being outside for just two minutes.
While heading home every evening, I have already noticed more people out walking through the neighborhood. That is great, however, after a while of walking the same route, it could get a bit boring and repetitive. Thankfully, those in Tyler and Longview have some options.
Top Trails in Tyler and Longview
Walking and biking trails are becoming a very important part of city life here in East Texas. Tyler has the Legacy Trails system that connects with the Rose Rudman Trail, and Longview has several independent walking trails. Each of these trails offers varying amenities and terrain, and some beautiful views of the area that you wouldn't normally see while driving alone.
How East Texans Recommend Trails
While our trails aren't fully interconnected, they do offer some alternatives to walking in neighborhoods. A new East Texan, who transplanted from Colorado, asked for trail recommendations on social media because they missed going on hikes.
While East Texas can't give this person the elevation, scenery, climate, and trail difficulty that they're accustomed to while on a hike in Colorado or what I experienced last summer in Jackson, WY, East Texans were eager to give this person some great suggestions for walking trails around the area and some nature hiking trails in state parks.

Tips Before You Hit the Trails
Before going on any walk or hike, the Boy Scout motto is always on my mind: 'Be Prepared'. Before you head out on any walk or hike, whether it is in the city or in a state park setting, it's a good idea to check the current trail conditions, park hours, and any permits or fees that may be required.

Also, be prepared with appropriate gear, water, and clothing for the season and terrain you'll be hiking in. Be sure to take your cell phone just in case you need to make an emergency call.
