Once again, the Lone Star State is seeking to prove the old saying that states everything is bigger in Texas. This time, it's something that is going to thrill outdoor enthusiasts.

A New Trail Across Central Texas

Planning is underway, and work is beginning on an ambitious project. Texas will soon be home to a hike and bike trail stretching from the Alamo to the Texas State Capitol.

A press release was issued in September detailing the ambitious plans for the massive trail. It will stretch 100 miles from San Antonio to Austin, and will give people a chance to experience some iconic Texas locales.

What the Bicentennial Trail Will Connect

The trail system, named the Bicentennial Trail in honor of the upcoming 200th anniversary of Texas' independence, will connect already existing trails along with new ones. It will also feature Texas historical sites and landscape features.

The Bicentennial Trail will connect Barton, San Marcos, Comal, and San Antonio Springs. It will also help to protect 50,000 acres of land.

Timeline, Law & Future Impact

The project is slated to be done by January 1, 2036. That's just in time for the 200th anniversary of Texas' independence.

Earlier in 2025, the trail was actually signed into law by Texas lawmakers. HB 4230 instructs state agencies on what to do, and even addresses the use of eminent domain to acquire land for the trail. The bill states that eminent domain is not to be used.

Governor Abbott signed the bill, and it went into effect on September 1 of this year. The bill claims that this trail will be a great draw for tourists who want to experience the beauty and history of Texas.

I love hiking, and I love it even more when the trail offers me a chance to see something I normally wouldn't. It will be interesting to see the Texas Bicentennial Trail once the work is done, and trying to set up a trip to see how much of it I can cover.

It sounds like this trail will offer all of us an opportunity to experience Texas in a whole new way.
