Long Running Bar Near Tech Calls It Quits After Nearly 30 Years
It's the end of an era with the recently announced closure of Skooners (1617 University), a bar I regularly attended way back when I regularly attended bars. You'll be missed Skoon-tangs! The last day will be this Sunday with a final last call.

What Skooners Was All About

The legendary David Trout was the host of karaoke here for years. "Hot Damn! Cold Beer!"
You could count on the waitress singing, too, and for a time be pretty much guaranteed to hear Zombie. It was a long-running, light-hearted joke with the regulars.
We stopped going to Skoon-tangs after our favorite bartenders were let go, as the bartender is the heart and soul of a bar. Skooners did a few different rebranding attempts of sorts, but a dive bar is a dive bar is a dive bar.
Why Skooners Is Closing After Such A Long Run
According to a post from Skooners, it's because one of the owners sadly passed away.
It is with a broken heart that we announce that our captain, Mark Garland has gone on to warmer waters. He left us yesterday happy and comfortable with all his crew around.
Folks who loved Skooners are invited to one final last call:
We would like to invite all of our friends to come say a fond farewell to him on Sunday at 4pm at Skooners. And at this time we will also give our last call. [...]. Come say hello, give us your best stories, and raise a final glass to him. We hope to see you all on Sunday at 4.
We wish the best to the staff of Skooners on their next adventure.
