Rattlesnakes in Lubbock: Where They Turn Up in Late Summer and What to Do If You’re Bitten

Late summer is prime rattlesnake season around these parts. Most Lubbock residents will likely never encounter one, fingers crossed, BUT August and September are when rattlesnake sightings become more common, so let's cover the basics just in case.

Rattlesnakes in Lubbock

If you do happen to see one in Lubbock, you're most likely to see a Western Diamondback. They prefer to stay far away from people but can be found in tall grass, brush piles, dry creek beds, vacant lots, ranchland, and homes that neighbor open fields. They also love to hang out in areas that have a lot of rodents, i.e., Tasty Snacks!

Leave Them Alone!

If you spot a rattlesnake, you should always leave it alone. Most of the time, people get bitten when they are trying to kill, move, or handle the snake. Give it a ton of space and let it move away from you on its own.

If A Rattlesnake Bites You...

• Call 911 immediately or get to the nearest emergency room ASAP.
• Stay calm and limit your movements.
• Keep the bitten area below the level of your heart, if possible.
• Remove watches, rings, and tight clothing before swelling begins.
• Do NOT try to suck the venom out
• Do NOT cut the wound.
• Do NOT apply a tourniquet or ice.
• Do not wait to see if your symptoms worsen before seeking help.

Rattlesnake bites are rarely fatal as long as they are treated quickly. If you're spending a lot of time outside in Lubbock during this part of the year, watch your step and avoid brush and rock piles, and always remember, rattlesnakes almost always want to avoid YOU as much as you want to avoid THEM!
