Hispanic Heritage Month 2024: How Texas' Explosive Hispanic Growth is Shaping Our State

As of 2023, Texas continues to hold the title as the state with the second-largest Hispanic population in the United States, second only to California. But here's the kicker: The Hispanic population in Texas has been booming, with recent figures showing a staggering 39.89% increase in the past 24 months, driven by a combination of natural growth and immigration, including a surge in undocumented residents.

So, what does this mean for Texas and why is Hispanic Heritage Month more significant than ever?

The Roots and Reach of Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month, running from September 15th to October 15th, isn't just a celebration—it's a recognition of the deep, historical ties and contributions that Hispanic and Latino communities have made to the United States, particularly in states like Texas.

But why does this celebration split across two months? The answer lies in history. September 15th was chosen as the starting point because it marks the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The following day, September 16th, commemorates Mexico's independence from Spain, a date deeply rooted in Texas' own history.

A Month Full of Meaning

This 30-day period is packed with significance, not just for the anniversaries of independence for various Latin American countries, but also for the broader recognition of Hispanic contributions across the U.S. From military service to entrepreneurship, Hispanic Americans have played, and continue to play, a pivotal role in shaping the nation.

Did you know that 61 Americans of Hispanic heritage have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor? These include two members of the Navy, 13 from the U.S. Marine Corps, and 46 from the U.S. Army and Air Force. During Hispanic Heritage Month, the U.S. Military takes special pride in honoring both the fallen and active-duty Hispanic Americans who have served our country bravely.

The Power of Hispanic-Owned Businesses

Just as crucial to our state’s economy are the Hispanic business owners who keep Texas thriving. With Texas ranking among the top states alongside California and Florida for the highest number of Hispanic-owned businesses, it's clear that the economic influence of this community is undeniable.

These businesses not only provide jobs but also inject vitality and culture into our cities and towns. They’re a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that defines both Texas and the Hispanic community.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month – Texas Style

This Hispanic Heritage Month, take the opportunity to explore and celebrate the rich cultural tapestry that Hispanic Texans contribute to our state. Whether it’s through attending local events, supporting Hispanic-owned businesses, or simply learning more about the history that has shaped us, there’s a way for everyone to get involved.

I know I’ll be celebrating in my own way, and I encourage you to do the same. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month, Texas!
