I was given the honor and privilege to broadcast live from the Abilene Kennel Club's annual Dog Show at the Taylor County Coliseum this past weekend and was blown away by how many different breeds of dogs were there. The AKC's Show Chair, Cindy Knox, said there were 200 different breeds represented at this year's show.

Seeing so many different kinds of dogs at the show, I got to wondering about the most popular dog breeds in Texas. I know when I go to various pet adoptions around west Texas, I see a lot of Pit Bulls, Boxers, Bulldogs, and Aussie Cow Dogs.

One important piece to this puzzle is that favorite dog breeds change from year to year. You ask yourself why? Often because a certain kind of dog might be popular on a TV show or a movie. Remember "Gidget", the infamous Taco Bell Chihuahua that only said "Yo quiero Taco Bell"?

After that commercial, adoptions of Chihuahuas exploded first in Texas, and then all across America. However, it's important to note that preferences can change over time, and other breeds gain popularity. Additionally, regional popularity can vary within Texas (according to AKC 2022).

The breeds listed here have enjoyed popularity due to various qualities like temperament, trainability, and suitability for different lifestyles. However, it's worth noting that individual preferences differ, and there are many other wonderful dog breeds loved by Texans as well.

It's always a good idea to research and consider factors such as size, activity level, and specific breed traits when choosing a dog that suits your lifestyle and preferences. Most importantly, I personally recommend that you adopt a canine from one of the many shelters throughout west Texas. From El Paso to Amarillo, shelters are filled with adoptable pets.
