Love them or hate them, Homeowners Associations have a reputation for being a pain. Want to paint your house a fancy new color? No go buckaroo. Hoping to plant a garden in your front yard? Breaks the code of conduct.

Goodyear's Free Water Stand
During the COVID-19 pandemic, David Martin of Goodyear, AZ wanted to show his neighbors he cared. So, with the help of his wife, he put together a no-questions-asked free water stand.. Neighbors, friends, and anyone passing by could stop by the cooler on his driveway, and walk away with a water bottle, free of charge.
The concept went over so well, that they continued it all the way to present day, where they run through 30-40 flats of water a year. Martin says that sometimes he'll receive flats of water at his door from neighbors and good Samaritans looking to help the cause.

Here Come the Fun Police
We can never have anything nice, apparently. In May of 2024, nearly four years after the project kicked off, Martin's Homeowners Association began to crack down. They started issuing a $50 fine for "storing items in plain view".
Once the summer months started, a time when hydration is an absolute necessity, the fines began to reach $100. Martin has made it clear that he has no intent to stop, and will continue to fight the HOA over this. He claims to have brought this up with them years ago, and they had no issue whatsoever.
While it is not technically illegal to punish someone for giving out free water, it certainly paints a poor picture of the HOA that runs Martins neighborhood. His only goal is to keep the neighbors he loves hydrated and happy, and will stop at nothing until thee issue is resolved.
