Texas Hotel's Life-Sized Gingerbread House Wonder

Since I've moved to El Paso I have been in awe at how the city comes alive with the magic of the holidays. This time, it's the Hotel Paso del Norte that's stealing the show with a jaw-dropping, life-sized gingerbread house. You read that right—a gingerbread house big enough to make you feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook.

For their fourth annual gingerbread tradition, the pastry chefs at this historic downtown hotel have truly outdone themselves. This "sweet masterpiece" will make its grand debut during the Tree Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Celebration on Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

And what’s better than a giant gingerbread house? How about celebrating its unveiling with photos with Santa, festive performances by local school choirs, and indulging in s’mores, cookies, and other holiday treats? All of this is happening for free, which means there’s no excuse to miss out.

The Ingredients of a Dream

Let’s talk about the gingerbread house itself, because this thing is an engineering—and culinary—marvel. Here’s what went into creating this edible wonder:

30 pounds of peppermint starlight mints
120 pieces of Hershey's chocolate
200 blocks of gingerbread cookies
36 pounds of brown sugar
216 pounds of all-purpose flour
15 pounds of spices (clove, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg)
250 pounds of royal icing
144 pounds of powdered sugar
188 candy canes
88 spritz cookies
80 donuts

I don’t know about you, but reading that list alone has me craving something sweet. It’s staggering to think about the effort it must have taken the pastry team to assemble this masterpiece.

A Sweet Display Through Christmas

Once unveiled, the gingerbread house will be on display at the hotel until Christmas. This gives us plenty of time to check it out, snap some pictures, and admire the craftsmanship.
