High School Makes West Texas History with Prestigious STEM Certification
Montwood High School in east El Paso has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first high school in west Texas to earn the National Certificate for STEM Excellence (NCSE) campus certification. This recognition, awarded by the National Institute for STEM Education (NISE), highlights Montwood's outstanding commitment to science, technology, engineering, and math education.
The Socorro Independent School District (SISD) celebrated this achievement on Tuesday with a ceremony honoring the school's staff and their dedication to innovative teaching. Representatives from NISE presented certificates and a commemorative banner to Montwood’s teachers and principal, marking the school’s place among the nation's elite STEM-focused institutions.
A District-Wide Triumph
Montwood High School is the third campus in SISD to receive this prestigious recognition. Sierra Vista and Escontrias STEAM academies were similarly honored in 2024 and 2023, respectively. However, Montwood stands out as the first comprehensive high school in west Texas to earn the certification, making this achievement a historic one for the region.
National Recognition for Excellence
The honor places Montwood High School in elite company, as the 50th campus in Texas and only the 16th high school nationwide to receive the NCSE certification. This distinction underscores the school’s innovative approach to STEM education, which equips students with the critical skills needed to thrive in the 21st century.
Celebrating Success and Inspiring Futures
SISD’s continued commitment to advancing STEM education through schools like Montwood High is a testament to the district’s forward-thinking vision. This achievement not only elevates the school and its staff but also serves as an inspiration for students across El Paso and beyond.
As Montwood High School proudly displays its new banner, it also paves the way for future generations to explore, innovate, and lead in STEM fields.
