High School Football Live Scores and 5 Points for Opening Weekend

The 2020 high school football season has officially kicked off in El Paso, with a full slate of games set for Friday night and some key matchups for week one.

Last Night: Canutillo kicks the game-winning field in the final seconds

Canutillo 17 - Austin 16

The opening night did not disappoint at R.E. McKee Stadium as the Panthers-Eagles non-district matchup featured five lead changes in this thrilling Thursday night game.

Canutillo's sophomore running back LJ Martin and junior quarterback Devin Granados led the way for the Eagles on Thursday. Martin opened up the scoring in the first half by notching a 13-yard rushing touchdown to put the Eagles up 7-3 early on.

Austin flashed a talented duo of their own with senior running back duo Will Rodriguez and Isiah Witterstuter. Rodriguez finished the first half with an interception on defense and a one-yard rushing touchdown to score off the turnover. Granados' two-yard rushing touchdown before halftime gave the Eagles a slight 14-10 lead at the break.

During the second half, it was a defensive battle. At one point in the third quarter, both teams put together lengthy drives that resulted in back-to-back turnover on downs in enemy territory. Austin sophomore quarterback Irving Cortinas, who started his first game of the year, hit senior Miguel Vazquez in the fourth quarter on a 29-yard passing play to set up a touchdown drive capped off by another one-yard score by Rodriguez, giving Austin a 16-14 lead after a failed extra-point attempt.

Canutillo converted on one final chance late in the game. Granados hit Martin on a 29-yard bomb on 4th-and-21. This set up a field goal for the Eagles in which Abraham Avila kicked the game-winner as time expired, giving Canutillo the 17-16 win.

Eastlake football returns with a trio of standouts

The Eastlake Falcons made the jump to 1-6A and they have a marquee matchup on Friday against the reigning 1-5A Division II district champions in Parkland. The Falcons are coming off a District 1-5A Division I championship and return a heap of talent to their roster.

Most notably, the Falcons bring back their senior quarterback and one of the best gunslingers in town, Orion Olivas. The Houston Baptist commit will have a stellar tandem of weapons to work with. Wideout and defensive back Blas Compean and wideout Matt Jones are among the city's best athletes and should be a treat to watch this year. Jones set a Texas state high school football record last year with the most catches in a single game (25). Olivas is coming off a season in which he threw for 3,685 yards and scored 35 total touchdowns.

Head coach Eric Frontz has high expectations for his Matadors team, despite losing their standout quarterback Gabe Herrera from last year. Running back Jonathan Barton, receiver Dwayne Ford and defensive back Jayden Campbell lead the way for Parkland. Don't sleep on linebacker David Chavira (88 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 sacks in 2019) from the Matadors, who was listed as Dave Campbell's Texas Football's preseason defensive MVP.

Americas is back and might be better than ever

The magnificent 10-2 (5-0, 1-6A) 2019 season for the Americas Trailblazers was remarkable, but head coach Patrick Melton has something special cooking for this year's squad. They bring back key returners on both sides of the ball and are hands down the team to beat in El Paso.

Senior running back Aaron Dumas (3,184 rushing yards, 34 touchdowns) is the leader of this group and the 3-star prospect has a chance this year to break Deion Hankins' all-time rushing record. Dumas committed to New Mexico over the offseason and earned some nice FBS offers over the course of his high school career. Senior defensive end Dylan Kemp was recognized as an all-state selection after he posted 80 tackles and a whopping 31 sacks in 2019. Other key returners include ATH Evan Chisolm, wideout Sir Drennan, linebacker Cristian Martinez and offensive lineman Joe Angel Nunez.

Del Valle has a pretty fun team to watch but it'll be an uphill battle for the Conquistadores on Friday.

Other matchups to watch

There are a lot of interesting week one matchups because of all the uncertainties going into this season.

A Coronado team that needs some momentum this year will face Chapin on Friday, which is entering a new era under head coach Ryan Warner. Eastwood will get to flash their talented quarterback in Andrew Martinez as they host Hanks. The Knights have 33 seniors on their roster coming off their bi-district title last year.

We get to see the rare Andress-Franklin matchup tonight as well, where the Cougars return a heap of players to their defense. Socorro will take a stab at snapping their losing streak against Ysleta, while Ray Aguilar Jr. will make his head coaching debut with El Paso High against a talented Clint team that flashes experienced returners on their team.

Game of the night: Montwood at Burges

The highlight of the offseason in local high school football was seeing the attention that Burges junior running back Tavorus Jones earned by major colleges across the country. The four-star prospect has offers from Alabama, Michigan, Texas, Baylor, Penn State, Florida...—you name it! Now it's time to see him put it all on the field against 1-6A foe Montwood on Friday.

Head coach Ariel Famaligi speaks highly of his Montwood team coming into this year, especially their top group of receivers who return to the mix. Wideouts Aaron Morales, Sal Soto, Yamil Oaxaca and Jazz Jackson make up a talented receiving group for the Rams. Defensively, they are led by Ivan Escobar (88 tackles, 16 TFL, 3 sacks in 2019).

Besides Jones, Burges has some true studs on their team. New Mexico commit Alec Marenco (WR/LB) is one of the top athletes in the city. Fellow running back Robert Hall is a stud tailback. And finally, quarterback A.J. Caldwell did some nice things last year as the starter at quarterback. The Mustangs want to prove to the city that they are legit and upsetting a 1-6A opponent like Montwood would put everyone on notice.
