Canutillo 34 - Del Valle 28 (OT): LJ Martin shines in Canutillo’s 34-28 OT win over Del Valle

By Alex Nicholas

Canutillo’s LJ Martin had one solid week.

The junior added his fifth FBS offer this week after the Big 12’s Kansas State offered, then on Friday night he had a career night to remember against a former district rival.

Martin ran for 198 yards, three rushing touchdowns, he caught a 75-yard touchdown pass, and came up with a huge interception in overtime.

Del Valle had the ball first in overtime after a frantic fourth quarter finish and was driving inside the Canutillo 15-yard line when Jesse Ramos had his pass attempt tipped and into the hands of LJ Martin who returned it for 19 yards to give Canutillo possession.

A few plays later, Martin lined up at quarterback in the wildcat and sealed the win with a two-yard touchdown run to walk off a big non-district win.

Martin would have two long touchdown runs in the first half.  The first a 58-yard sprint, then a 77-yard touchdown run that put Canutillo ahead 14-0 with 11:10 left until halftime.

The Canutillo defense shut down Del Valle in the first half, holding them to just 12 rushing yards, as the Eagles led 14-7 going into the halftime break.

Del Valle quarterback Jesse Ramos got on a roll in the second half, completing eight passes in a row at one point and brought the Conquistadores back into the game.

Ramos finished the evening 19-for-29 passing for 268 yards, he ran for two touchdowns and threw for another score.

He would lead a pair of scoring drives to tie the game at 21-21 after a short touchdown pass to Damian Diaz with 7:30 left in the game.

Martin had put Canutillo up 21-7 after he sped past the Del Valle defense for a 75-yard touchdown on a wheel route.

Canutillo would quickly answer after Del Valle came back to tie it. Canutillo quarterback Devin Granados tossed a hitch pass to Lorenzo Areola who took it 60-yards to the house just 14 seconds after Del Valle tied the game.

As well as Ramos was playing, he would fumble on a scramble inside the red zone on the ensuing possession, but a costly Canutillo mistake became gold for the Del Valle defense.

On a third-and-nine from Canutillo’s own 10-yard line with the Eagles leading 28-21 with less than two minutes left, a bad snap went to the left of Granados and was recovered by Del Valle’s Jonathan Salas in the end zone which was the score that sent things to overtime.

Canutillo put up 458 yards of offense, Granados threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Areola finished the night with three catches for 87 yards.

Eli Molina was a big part of Del Valle’s second half offensive surge catching seven passes for 147 yards, Del Valle put up 239 total yards in the second half after they were held to just 91 total yards in the opening half.

Both teams head into a bye week at 3-1 overall.

El Dorado 30 - Clint 27: El Dorado hangs on to down Clint

By Steve Escajeda

Clint kicker Carlos Arreola’s last-second 49-yard field goal try sailed wide left and El Dorado hung on for a 30-27 victory over the Lions at the Student Activities Center Friday night. The win was the first of the season for the Aztecs (1-3), who almost let a seemingly comfortable 30-19 lead with three minutes left in the game, completely get away. Clint (2-2) came into the game averaging a whopping 430 yards rushing, but it was El Dorado’s running game that stole the show.

The Aztecs piled up 360 yards on the ground, paced by Isaiah Rudison’s 285 yards and all four El Dorado touchdowns. The explosive Rudison scored on runs 45, 45, 66 and 77 yards.

Clint, which was held to 226 rushing yards as a team (203 yards below its average), was led by quarterback Isiah Gonzalez, who ran for 115 yards and three touchdowns.Clint will try to bounce back next Friday when hosts Big Spring, while El Dorado tries to make it two wins in a row when it travels to Ysleta.
