El Paso’s Skyline Changed Forever [VIDEO]
The iconic Asarco smokestacks fell today, and holy cow, I've never seen anything like it in my life!
Darren and I headed out to the parking lot just beyond the KVIA studios and were in place when the sun came up and shined on the stacks one more time before they met their fate.
There were about 100 people in the parking lot with us and when the warning blasts went off, you could almost feel everyone hold their breath for another minute before we saw the smaller stack begin to tilt, and finally fall. There was no noise until about 10 seconds later when the concussion of the blast that brought the stack down hit us.
Then as the larger stack fell, people gasped, I kept saying, "Oh my God, oh my God!", because the sight of that 800 foot stack tilting and falling was so shocking. About 10 seconds later, the blast from the dynamite that brought that stack down shook the ground for a second and actually took my breath away!
The stacks are down, and we have one more day in Demolition Weekend here in El Paso.
