Ok, so whenever I bring up the past to my therapist I’m always reminded, “Stop thinking of the past! You can't fix it and It can bring up unpleasant memories and negative thoughts, Iris.”

While I do agree with my therapist, I also disagree because I think that sometimes remembering the past is a good thing when the memories are good!

Case and point: El Pasoan Bobby Grayson recently shared a few photos he found of his former Elementary school, North Loop Elementary, before it was demolished.

“So many memories and a lot of Generations of kids going to this school,” wrote Bobby on his Facebook post.

The best part of these photos was that they were taken a day before the school was going to be demolished and rebuilt to what it is now.

Now, here’s why this kind of “bringing up the past” moment is a good thing. As soon as he posted the photos, his Facebook comments section was flooded with sweet memories of others who attended North Loop Elementary School before it was rebuilt.

Grace Vasquez commented, “ Our dad also attended North Loop! Our principal was Mr. Haines. Our music teacher was Miss Howard! I love that school!”

Grace went on to ask who remembered the school song and in case people forgot, she reminded them of the lyrics:

”Live for dear old North Loop! Fight for her true colors. Floating high above us, red and blue we (and never knew what followed anyone? lol!) Loyal and together! We are best must do! So Live for dear Old North Loop, she Lives for you!!”

That’s some pretty amazing memory right there! I can barely remember what day of the week it is. Kudos to you, Grace.

Bion Bell commented, “Remember all those cool motor cops that hung out in the school zone.”

While Richard Anthony Campos shared memories from the best thing to ever exist in Elementary schools, The jungle gym:

“Old stomping grounds! I still tell people about the best jungle gym ever! That school was great! I haven't driven by in such a long time, I had no idea they demolished and rebuilt it. I once saw a lady get mugged across the street at that bar that used to be there.”

I sure hope that last memory didn't scar you, Richard.

A few people also shared their thoughts about the rebuilding of the school with a few people not in favor of the school being rebuilt:

“My old school. They should have left it the way it was,” wrote Israel Fuentes.

Regardless of whether people agreed or didn't agree with the rebuilding of the school, one thing almost everyone agreed on was that some of the best memories have taken place at North Loop Elementary.

“Made so many good friends and still to this day are my friends. I'm just glad I get to share a little memory I would never forget,” wrote Bobby in a comment on his Facebook post.

So, while I do agree that sometimes bringing up the past is not ideal (my ex-boyfriend is probably nodding his head in total agreement right now) I do think that certain memories are worth bringing up.

Letting go of the past can help you have a happy future BUT sometimes remembering memories that led you to where you’re at in life today can be a happy reminder.
