Our local blood bank, Vitalant is in dire need of blood donors in our area.

According to Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services), it is in extreme shortage of blood as providers have less than a couple of days of blood supply.

Vitalant, the local nonprofit blood bank serves both the El Paso and Las Cruces regions and is looking to our communities to help replenish our blood bank supply.

Currently, Vitalant is looking for all blood types, with a special need for platelets and type O blood donations. Platelets have a very short shelf life of only five days. Type O-negative blood is the universal blood type that can help stabilize all patients. Nationally, a collection of more than 35,000 blood products per week is needed to meet patient needs. In the El Paso and Las Cruces regions, we need to collect close to 350 blood products per day to meet local patient needs.

Due to the critical shortage, donors are strongly encouraged to give blood by calling 877-258-4825 or visit online at bloodhero.org to make an appointment or for more information.
