Only El Paso Will Understand This 4th of July Starter Pack

Some of my favorite 4th of July childhood memories in El Paso include spending the day with family, eating way too much barbecue, waiting for the sun to go down, then grabbing our lawn chairs to watch fireworks from my grandma’s yard back when Western Playland's fireworks lit up the sky over Ascarate Park.

If you've ever spent the Fourth of July in El Paso, you already know it hits differently. We're talking about amazing food, triple-digit temperatures, questionable fireworks legality, and at least one tía yelling, "¡Cuidado!" before someone lights a Roman candle. Me. I’m that tia!

I asked El Pasoans to help us create the ultimate El Paso Fourth of July Starter Pack and while some were hilarious, they were also very relatable!

Folding chairs and a kiddie pool
Forget fancy patio furniture. Every neighborhood has that one house with lawn chairs lined up, kids splashing in a kiddie pool, and a cooler full of drinks. No invitation required—just show up with your towel and your chancletas.

Meat that's been marinating since Monday
Hot dogs are fine, but in El Paso? We're firing up discada, brisket, ribs, and pollo asado. Every family has a grill master who treats the barbecue like it's a full-time job.

Fireworks... from somewhere
Let's just say everyone knows someone who "knows a guy." Whether they're legal or not is another conversation entirely, but you can count on hearing fireworks echoing across the city long before the official shows begin.

Sparklers
They may be the safest fireworks around, but somehow they're still responsible for making everyone nervous (me) especially when a kid starts waving one around like they're conducting an orchestra.

A playlist that's 90% Mexican music
It's America's birthday, but don't be surprised if the soundtrack is full of cumbias, norteñas, rancheras, and old-school classics. That's just how we celebrate on the border.

Triple-digit heat
If you aren't checking your phone to see if it's hit 100 degrees yet, is it really a Fourth of July in El Paso? Sunscreen, cold drinks, and plenty of shade are basically part of the holiday tradition.

Ending the night under the fireworks
Whether you're headed to one of El Paso's official fireworks shows, catching a drone show, or simply watching the sky light up from your driveway, there's no better way to wrap up the holiday.
