The history of Fort Bliss will be explored this weekend at the El Paso Museum of History on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015 beginning at 2 p.m.

History buffs will be able to learn about Fort Bliss through John Hamilton, Director of the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss Museum, who will take visitors on a journey through the history of Fort Bliss since the post first opened in El Paso, back in 1849.

Hamilton will discuss the evolution of Fort Bliss as it transitioned from infantry to cavalry, air defense and maneuver training, including its role in the Indian or Native American conflicts, the Civil War, the Mexican Revolution, both world wars, and the more modern conflicts.

John Hamilton was a US Army Infantry officer from 1971 until his retirement from active duty in 1994 as a lieutenant colonel.  His many military assignments include division historian and Air Defense Artillery Historian as well as a Professor of Military Science at the University of Arkansas.  He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in history from Texas A&M University and a Master’s Degree from the University of Southern California and is also the author of the book Blazing Skies, a history of Air Defense Artillery on Fort Bliss.
