10 Words or Phrases That Boldly Prove You Are From Texas
If you have been in Texas any amount of time and know a native Texan, you have probably heard one or more of these phrases.
1. Mudrain
What happens to us quite often actually, it is when a thunderstorm comes through and picks up dust so when it rains, the rain is full of said dirt. "Did you take your truck to the carwash to wash off all the mudrain?"
2. Fixin' To
A common phrase for me, it means "about to" like: "I am fixin' to go to the store."
3. A Cat and Nine Little Kitties
This is a phrase my mom and grandmother used all of my life, it's when someone is going to freak out about something. "When momma found out my little sister was pregnant, she had a cat and nine little kitties."
4. All Git-Out
This phrase is used when you are trying to communicate the most extreme case of something. "Cody's Mustang is as fast as all git-out," "This cake is great as all git-out."
5. Bless Your Heart
Simply put, this is a Texan's polite way of saying "You're a dumbass." Add "Pea-Pickin'" between "Your" and "Heart" and that means you are beyond stupid or ignorant. "You fell out of the back of the pickup cause you didn't make sure the tailgate was locked in place? Bless your pea-pickin' heart."
6. Come Hell or High Water
This simply means that you will do something no matter what it takes. "I am going to a Dallas Cowboys game in Arlington this year come hell or high water."
7. Corn-Fed Country Boy
This is a phrase to describe someone who is big, mostly used for a guy that is very tall and well-built. "Billy is definitely a corn-fed country boy."
8. Pitch a Hissy Fit
Simply put, this is just a good old-fashioned temper tantrum. "All was going well with the kids until Christy pitched a hissy fit because she didn't get her way."
9. Dumber Than a Bag of Hammers
This is another way to say someone is really stupid. Another phrase I have heard similar to that is "Dumber Than a Box of Rocks." "Frank is dumber than a bag of hammers."
10. Dad Gum It
This is when you are around grandma and don't want to cuss. This replaces any cuss word really but it is especially used in place of "dammit." "Dad gum it Carl, where did you put the keys to the car?"
There are some phrases you will hear in this area and what they mean in case you can't figure it out because you are dumber than a bag of hammers.
