After pulling the plug on its initial plans to reopen all four of its El Paso theaters earlier this month, Cinemark announced it will instead reopen in phases beginning with the Cinemark 20 and XD, a.k.a Tinseltown.

The theater chain’s Las Palmas Marketplace location is set to welcome movie fans back Friday, July 31, according to the company website. Tinseltown will be the only Cinemark location to reopen in El Paso for now. But it’s not the only movie house in town to reopen. Premiere Cinema’s Lux 17 + IMAX at Basset Place fired up its popcorn machines a month ago.

For now, both chains are only offering classic flicks. That's because every new movie originally scheduled for summer release has been pushed back to fall or even next year, thus movie fans seeking some out-of-the-house entertainment will have to make do with mostly older movies.

More recent fare from this decade is also getting sprinkled in here and there at both theaters, but its mostly stuff you've seen dozens of times on cable or some pay television channel. But, hey, it's something to do, gets you out of the El Paso sun, and two words: movie popcorn.

Safety Measures

Like everything else that has opened back up since its pandemic shutdown, it won’t be business as usual. Safety measures for moviegoers and employees will be in place. You can do a deep dive of Cinemark’s safety protocols HERE, and Premiere’s HERE.
