If you have a pumpkin to carve/eat this Halloween, I'm pretty sure it came from Texas. Most likely, a teeny little town in central Texas.

Texas, (according to the Texas Tribune), is one of the top 6 pumpkin producing states, (in 2021, we grew 108 meeeeellion pounds of those suckers), and most of them came from one of our smallest towns.

Pumpkins are serious business in the lone star state and a tiny little town with a funny name not far from El Paso ... about 400 miles away, near Lubbock ... produces most of the Texas 'kins.

Welcome to Floydada, Texas

Floydada, Texas has a population of only 2,500 pumpkin eaters but they produce about 50 million pounds of pumpkins. That's 2000 pumpkins per resident. If you think you're sick and tired of pumpkin spiced "everything", imagine how these folks feel.

Texas is among the top six states in the United States for pumpkin production. In 2020, Texas farmers led the nation in pumpkin crop value at $25.9 million. In the following year, they produced 108 million pounds of pumpkins. In Floydada, about 50 miles northeast of Lubbock, around 50 million pounds of the state’s pumpkins are grown every year.

How Did Floydada Get That Weird Name?

There's a little mystery behind the origin of Floydada's weird name. Here are 2 theories from the Texas State Historical Association:

  1. The town was first named "Floyd" ... cuz, why not? ... but there was already a "Floyd" in Hunt County. So, they modified it to Floydalia. However, a typo, (remember, everything was handwritten back then), somehow resulted in Floydada being entered into the official records.
  2. Floydada was established on land donated by James and Caroline Price who named it in honor of Caroline's parents, Floyd and Ada.
