Do You Really Need No Trespassing Signs In Texas?
No Trespassing signs send a pretty clear message but, in Texas, you don't really need a sign. If you do mark something "off limits", be sure you do it right.
There are many reasons you may not want strangers on your land. Privacy, preventing dangers associated with hunting or target shooting, security issues, protecting animals or property, etc, etc.
You have a right to keep people away and Texas law allows you to make that known in a number of ways. Here are the 5 ways to let peeps know they're not welcome on your land:
- A clear sign, displayed in front of a property, like “Keep Out” or “No Trespassing”.
- You can verbally tell folks or write 'em a note.
- You can plant crops on the area in question.
- Build a fence or some other sort of enclosure.
- You can mark trees, posts, etc around your property with purple paint.
The purple markings are a little tricky. In order for them to be deemed "legal", you need to follow a few directives that the lone star state has in place. The markings must be:
- Vertical lines that are no less than eight inches long and one inch wide.
- No less than three feet from the ground and no more than five feet from the ground.
- Easily visible to anyone approaching the property.
- No more than 100 feet apart on woodland properties and no more than 1,000 feet apart on non-forest lands.
