Odessa, Texas --  I only recently moved to the area a few months ago, January 6th to be exact.  So I have yet to experience warmer weather, let alone a Summer in the Permian Basin, thus far.  Being how I am from San Antonio, I am used to rivers, lakes, and even a 2-hour ride to the beach is easily accessible.  Here is West Texas, things are somewhat different.

All I know is that I need to get close to some kind of body of water this summer.  So I asked ChatGPT for close rivers or lakes that are within driving distance from Odessa.

Local Lakes and Ponds

Bull Well: Known for being a good place to go fishing, you can catch an assortment of fish, such as largemouth bass and blue catfish.  This spot near West Odessa is a popular place for locals to have a quiet place to fish that isn't far away.

Comanche Trail Park Lake: This small lake is located within Odessa and is part of the Comanche Trail Park.  It offers a community fishing lake, a trail that you can walk or ride a bike on, and a disc golf course.

Rivers Within Driving Distance

Pecos River at Horsehead Crossing:  This historic part of the Pecos River, which is located South of Odessa, is a popular spot for anyone who wants to learn about the history of the area and enjoy more traditional river festivities like fishing or swimming.

Larger Lakes Within Driving Distance

Buffalo Springs Lake:  This particular spot is located roughly 2 hours away from Odessa in Lubbock.  Particularly popular in Spring and especially the summer, thousands gather from all around West and North Texas to enjoy lake time under the sun, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.

Lake Colorado City State Park: Located around 90 minutes Northeast of Odessa, this destination is a popular camping location where attendees can enjoy the usual swimming, fishing, and other outdoor activities.

LOOK: How Many of These Classic Summer Toys Do You Remember?

If you grew up in the Wild West of the '60s, '70s, or '80s, summer toys were a lifeline because many of us were locked outside (until the street lights came on). Inside was no place for a kid! Check out these classic summer toys that kept us cool, kept us busy, and always seemed to add a dash of danger.
