Letter Carriers Rally in Waco Against USPS Takeover
In Waco, a protest took place at the post office located on the 400 block of Clay Avenue. The protest was organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and they were protesting against the privatization of the United States Postal Service (USPS).
"Trump's Proposal and the Financial Struggles of the USPS" 💰📉
In February, President Donald Trump said that he had been considering putting the Chamber of Commerce in charge of the USPS. This is due in part to the fact that the USPS has been operating at a loss since about 2007. Last year, 2024, the USPS reported a net loss of around $9.5 billion.
"Concerns Over Executive Control and Potential Privatization" 🏛️➡️🏭
Currently, the USPS is overseen by a Board of Governers and the Postmaster General. If the USPS was moved to the Chamber of Commerce, it would then be under control of the executive branch. Moving it under the executive branch is what makes the NALC local branch president, Jerrod Perry, fearful that President Trump would then move to privatize control of the USPS.
"Arguments For and Against Increased Oversight of the USPS" ⚖️🗣️
There are those in support of the move that believe putting more oversight on the USPS would result in an increase in efficiency to help combat that $9.2 billion loss. However, critics of the move point out that privatizing could result in a significant slowdown in the delivery of mail due to changes in operations as well as possible layoffs that would result in having less employees sorting and delivering mail.
The protest in Waco today was not the only one rallying against this matter. There were protests across the country that were organized through the NALC.
