Waymo, a company that had recently launched its self driving cars in Austin, has called back multiple vehicles for a very specific reason. What led to cars being taken off the roadway? Here's what is known at the time of writing.
Waymo's Beginnings And Appearance In Austin, Texas
Per the company's website, Waymo began back in 2009. Eventually in 2017, Waymo began to put their vehicles on roadways for testing. Soon, in 2025, Waymo made it's way to Austin, Texas, with help from a partnership with Uber.
Some reviews showed that people enjoyed using the service. But others, according to FOX 7, were not impressed. Other situations, per medical personnel, have resulted in issues caused by the cars being in the way of helping during emergency situations.

Now, certain vehicles are being pulled off the road. But does it affect Austin, Texas?
Is Austin, Texas Affected By The Waymo Recall?
As reported by Reuters, a total amount of 1,212 vehicles from Waymo are being removed from US roadways. Over a period of two years, 2022 to 2024, 16 incidents of "collisions with chains, gates and other barriers" were documented.
The good news of the situation is no vehicles that are Austin roads aren't affected, as reported by the Austin American-Statesmen. So those who live in Austin don't have to worry about Waymo vehicles disappearing.
But Reuters also revealed that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating "collisions with clearly visible objects that a competent driver would be expected to avoid." There is no updates in regards to that investigation at the time of writing.
