We’ve all heard the phrase “the first 48” when it comes to crime shows — but here in Lubbock, there’s another mystery playing out every two weeks: where did all the money go?

A new report from Talker Research found that the average American--including Lubbock residents--spend nearly 48% of their paycheck within the first 48 hours of getting paid. And for a lot of folks here in the Hub City, that number hits pretty close to home.

Between rent, groceries, and those “can’t wait” bills, it’s not hard to see how fast that hard-earned money disappears. In fact, about 35% of paychecks are gone within the first 12 hours after hitting your account. Ouch.

Lubbock Bills Don’t Wait

Lubbock residents aren’t exactly splurging on flat screens or fancy new trucks — most of this spending is on essentials. Around 52% of people say groceries and household necessities are their first stop after payday.

With grocery prices still higher than they were pre-pandemic, even a quick trip to Market Street or Sam's Club can knock a serious dent in your wallet. Add in utilities, gas, rent, and credit cards — and it’s easy to see why that “fresh paycheck” feeling doesn’t last long.

A lot of the problem comes down to timing. Most people are paid bi-weekly, but the bills never stop coming. While you’re waiting for the next payday, Lubbock Power & Light, Xcel Energy, and your internet provider are all waiting for theirs.

What Lubbock Wants: Faster Pay

The study also found that 62% of people say being paid daily or as they work would reduce stress and improve financial wellness. It’s an idea that’s catching on across industries — and it’s easy to imagine how helpful that could be for workers at Texas Tech, Covenant, or even the city itself.
