If you’ve lived in Lubbock for more than five minutes, chances are you’ve spent some serious time inside a United Supermarkets store. They’ve been feeding the South Plains for over 70 years—so it’s fair to say we know them pretty well.

Have Your Fresh Fish Steamed For Free

But even some of the most loyal United shoppers don’t know about one of their coolest hidden gems: They’ll steam your fish for you—right there in the store—for free.

Yep, no joke. Just walk over to the seafood section, pick out what you want—salmon, tilapia, shrimp, and yes, even lobster—and they’ll toss it in the steamer for you. No extra charge. No fuss. No dishes at home. Just hot, healthy food ready in minutes.

Oh, and they’ll season it, too. United offers several different flavor options like Old Bay (my personal fave), lemon pepper, Cajun, and a few others. You can customize it however you want. It’s like having your own personal chef…at the grocery store.

They Even Say it Themselves Right on Their Website

“Bake, sauté or grill seafood. Avoid frying or serving with cream sauces. Did you know United Supermarkets will season and steam almost any seafood item in our case for free? That makes a healthy dinner quick and easy!”

And honestly, they’re right. I love a fried catfish buffet as much as the next guy, but sometimes you want something lighter. Back when I was on a mission to drop some pounds, I’d hit up the United on 50th Street, grab a nice cut of salmon, have them steam it with Old Bay, and walk over to produce to grab a fresh avocado.

Boom. Healthy lunch. Cheap, filling, and under $8!

So next time you're at United, take advantage of this underrated little Lubbock life hack. It’s fast, it’s fresh, and it’s probably the easiest way to eat like a grown-up without feeling like you're being punished.
