Let’s be honest—it’s already hot out there, and summer’s not even officially here yet! But don’t sweat it (literally), because Reliant and the City of Lubbock Public Libraries have officially kicked off their Beat the Heat program to help Lubbock residents stay safe and chill when the temps soar.

The Libraries are Stepping Up

At a press conference set for Wednesday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at the Patterson Library, Reliant and city officials will celebrate the launch of this summer-saving effort that offers folks a free, cool place to escape the heat.

All four City of Lubbock Library locations—Godeke, Groves, Mahon, and Patterson—will act as Beat the Heat centers once the National Weather Service predicts three or more days in a row with a heat index above 104°. When that happens, these libraries turn into mini oases with air conditioning, free water, Wi-Fi, and charging stations. That’s right—you can cool down, charge up, and maybe even catch up on some reading while you're there.

Here's When & Where You Can Drop In

  • Godeke Library, 5034 Frankford Ave – Mon-Tues: 12-9 p.m., Wed-Sat: 9-6

  • Groves Library, 5520 19th St – Mon-Tues: 2-9 p.m., Wed-Sat: 9-6

  • Mahon Library, 1306 9th St – Mon-Wed: 9-9, Thurs-Sat: 9-6, Sun: 1-5

  • Patterson Library, 1836 Parkway Dr – Mon-Tues: 10-7, Wed-Sat: 9-6

Reliant’s not just doing this here in Lubbock. The program is also active in Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Corpus Christi, supporting 40 cooling centers total, giving away 1,100+ cooling devices, and donating close to $150,000 across Texas.

Deadly Texas: The Lone Star State's Most Dangerous Insects & Arachnids

Encounters with Texas insects can be magical (think flights of Monarch butterflies!), but mostly they tend to be neutral or negative. Should you really worry about creepy crawlies in Texas? These are the insects and arachnids you probably should be aware of, as they all could prove potentially fatal (although that outcome is very rare).
